Hernando de Soto Bridge Opens to Traffic
August 2, 1973
On August 2, 1973, Memphis saw the opening of the Hernando de Soto Bridge—also known as the ‘M Bridge’—connecting Tennessee to Arkansas by spanning the Mississippi River on I-40.
This engineering feat became a vital link for commerce and travel, quickly standing out for its distinct double-arched design and lighting up the riverfront skyline.
Today the bridge remains a Memphis landmark symbolizing the city as a major crossroads of the South. The ‘M Bridge’ continues to shape movement and opportunity across the region.
