On This Week in Memphis History
Chickasaw Cession (Jackson Purchase)
October 19, 1818
On October 19, 1818, Chickasaw leaders signed a treaty known as the Jackson Purchase, ceding West Tennessee — including the site where Memphis would rise — to the United States. This moment set the stage for permanent settlement in the region.
The agreement opened the door for settlers and entrepreneurs to shape a city along the Mississippi River’s edge. The Chickasaw Cession is a cornerstone moment for Memphis, paving the way for its founding less than a year later.
This legacy reminds us Memphis is built on layers of history, connection, and change. The city’s rich cultural roots run deep because of events like this.
