On This Week in Memphis History

Tom Lee’s Mississippi River Rescue

May 8, 1925

On May 8, 1925, Tom Lee witnessed the steamer M.E. Norman overturn in the Mississippi River near Memphis. Lee, though unable to swim, jumped into action in his small wooden boat to help the dozens struggling in the water.

Over the next hour, Lee rescued more than 30 passengers, ferrying them to safety one by one. His courage made headlines, and Memphis honored him with a park and memorial that still bear his name on the riverfront.

Tom Lee’s bravery remains a defining moment in Memphis history. Today, Tom Lee Park stands as a place where the city remembers a hero’s legacy and gathers for major events each year.
