Memphis State Faces UCLA in the NCAA Championship Game

March 26, 1973

On March 26, 1973, Memphis State made headlines on one of college basketball’s biggest stages. The Tigers faced off against John Wooden’s powerhouse UCLA team in the NCAA championship game.

The 1972–73 Memphis State squad, led by coach Gene Bartow, reached the national title matchup after a strong season and a semifinal win over Providence. The game pitted Larry Kenon, Larry Finch, and the Tigers against Bill Walton and the dominant Bruins.

Though Memphis State ultimately fell to UCLA, the championship run stands as a defining moment for basketball in the city. The Tigers’ success energized Memphis and left a legacy that shapes the city’s pride and tradition today.
