WC Handy’s Memphis Blues Released

September 27, 1912

On September 27, 1912, W. C. Handy officially published his composition “Memphis Blues,” now considered one of the foundational works in blues history.

Handy, known as the “Father of the Blues,” drew deep inspiration from Memphis’s musical atmosphere in the early 20th century as he crafted melodies blending African-American folk traditions, ragtime, and urban life. The debut of “Memphis Blues” opened the door for the blues to reach new audiences and influenced generations of musicians.

Today, “Memphis Blues” stands as a defining piece of the city’s rich musical heritage, honoring its tradition as the birthplace of soul, blues, and innovation in American music.
