On This Week in Memphis History

Hernando de Soto Bridge Opens to Traffic

August 2, 1973

On August 2, 1973, the Hernando de Soto Bridge opened to traffic, connecting Memphis to Arkansas over the Mississippi River.

This striking double-arched bridge quickly became an icon on the Memphis skyline. Known locally as the “M Bridge,” it carries I-40 westward and stands as a symbol of growth and connection for the city and the entire region.

Today, the Hernando de Soto Bridge is more than a road link—it’s a visual landmark lit up at night, anchoring riverfront sunsets and welcoming millions into Memphis every year.
