On This Week in Memphis History
Hurricane Elvis (Mid-South Derecho) Strikes Memphis
July 22, 2003
On July 22, 2003, Memphis was hit hard by the storm known locally as Hurricane Elvis. A powerful derecho brought winds topping 100 miles per hour, turning the city upside down overnight.
The storm knocked out power to hundreds of thousands, toppled massive trees, and left a lasting mark all across the Mid-South. It took weeks to clear debris and restore electricity as neighbors came together to support each other.
Memphis still remembers Hurricane Elvis as a moment when the city’s resilience and community spirit truly shone. Today, its legacy lives on through improved emergency response and the stories every Memphian who lived through it can tell.
