Fresh Opportunity Comes to Uptown Memphis
The Memphis and Shelby County Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) is making big strides in downtown revitalization, thanks to a recent grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Announced July 6, this funding boost is set to kickstart a new mixed-use project anchored by a grocery store in the Uptown area—marking an important investment in Memphis’s nutrition and neighborhood growth.
Addressing a Food Desert
Uptown Memphis has long faced limited access to fresh and affordable groceries. With this grant, the CRA aims to deliver a much-needed, full-service grocer, potentially transforming daily life for families and residents. Food deserts remain a persistent challenge in many Memphis communities, and this project is a strategic step to ensure everyone in the area can access healthy food options close to home.
More than Just Tomatoes
The grant isn’t just about food. Plans for the site include retail, housing, and community spaces. Projects like these create jobs and bring new services, making an immediate impact on the neighborhood and strengthening the local economy. This effort complements ongoing transformation efforts seen across Downtown Memphis and connects with other community redevelopment successes citywide. Read more on The Commercial Appeal.
