On November 12, 1944, Booker Taliaferro Jones Jr. was born in Memphis. A multi-instrumentalist and bandleader, Jones rose from the city’s music community to become the signature organ sound of Stax Records as the leader of Booker T. & the M.G.’s. His birth in the 901 matters to Memphis history because his playing, songwriting, and studio leadership helped crystallize the city’s distinct soul style heard around the world.
As a teenager, Jones began working at Stax, where the M.G.’s became the label’s house band. In 1962, the group recorded “Green Onions,” an instrumental that not only topped the R&B chart and crossed to No. 3 on the pop chart, but also announced Memphis as a powerhouse of American soul. Their work backed artists such as Otis Redding and Sam & Dave while also standing on its own. The band’s interracial lineup—two Black members and two white members—was notable in segregated-era Memphis and symbolized how music on McLemore Avenue could bridge divides.
National recognition followed. Booker T. & the M.G.’s entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, and the Recording Academy honored the group with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. Jones has continued to record, perform, and support Memphis institutions, with Stax Museum and Stax Music Academy programming keeping the sound he helped shape alive for new generations.
