A New Beginning at a Familiar Corner
If you have driven through East Memphis lately, you might have noticed some buzz at the iconic corner of Poplar Avenue and Yates Road. What was once the site of a beloved Wendy’s, demolished back in 2021, has been generating lots of speculation—and now, we have the answer. Sonic Drive-In, known for its classic American fare and roller-skating servers, is set to open at this high-profile intersection.
What’s on the Menu for Memphis?
Sonic is a favorite drive-in for many Memphians, with its vast menu of burgers, tots, slushes and signature cherry limeades. This new location brings the chain’s unique flair to East Memphis—a neighborhood full of historic dining spots and convenient for families, University of Memphis students and commuters alike. The franchise’s presence will mean more variety for local lunch breaks and dinner runs, as well as extra options for folks attending nearby sporting events or just looking for a casual bite.
A Fresh Chapter for a Key Location
The transformation of this former Wendy’s site is part of an ongoing refresh across Memphis dining. After the Wendy’s was razed, the lot stood empty, awaiting a new occupant. Now, with Sonic on track to open, the site will soon buzz with diners again in the heart of the Poplar corridor. For updates, you can read more from The Commercial Appeal.
