The Story

On July 4, 1976, Libertyland opened at the Mid-South Fairgrounds, giving Memphians a new, family-oriented destination in the heart of Midtown. Timed with the nation’s Bicentennial, the park’s debut added year‑round identity to fairgrounds better known for the annual Mid‑South Fair. Contemporary records confirm the official opening date and location, and note that Libertyland incorporated existing signature attractions on the site: the historic Pippin wooden roller coaster—soon rebranded Zippin Pippin—and the 1909 Dentzel Grand Carousel. Those two rides linked the new park to earlier chapters of Memphis history, even as Libertyland introduced fresh amusements and live entertainment that drew generations of Bluff City visitors.

Through the late 1970s and 1980s, Libertyland became part of local routines—summer outings, school trips, and first jobs—woven into the culture of the 901 alongside institutions from the Fairgrounds to Beale Street. While the park faced periodic financial challenges, the opening marked a milestone in how Memphis activated the Fairgrounds for recreation and civic life.

Legacy

Libertyland closed in 2005, but its most storied pieces endure. The Grand Carousel was restored and reopened to the public at the Children’s Museum of Memphis on December 2, 2017, preserving an early‑20th‑century treasure for new riders. The Zippin Pippin lives on through a faithful rebuild operating at Bay Beach Amusement Park in Green Bay, introduced there in 2011. Together, these continuities keep Libertyland’s spirit in motion and underscore the park’s lasting role in Memphis history.
